The Wheelock MT is a series of 8-tone horns and horn strobes. There are models for fire alarm signaling, and mass notification. The tone can be selected using DIP switches on the back of the device, and every tone has 2 volume settings.

History

The AMT was in development as early as 1991 when early specifications were included with the AES patent.[2] This plan of the AMT included an option to manually select a tone instead of applying the prioritization algorithm, a feature that was ultimately excluded and placed in the MT series.

The MT was released in 1993 as a remote horn and a horn strobe with the WM strobe.[1] The remote horn was available for flush mounting (MT models) and 4-inch square surface mounting (MT4 models), while the horn strobe was only available for flush mounting.[3] The MT models had tabs to cover the screws, while the MT4 models had the same visible screws as the previous EL-mounted devices. The original A&E specification stated that the device would have a continuous "tone" in place of the electronic bell, but this was changed shortly after release if not before release.[4]

Later in 1993, models with ADA strobes, namely the LS, LSM, MS, and IS, were released for both MT and MT4 models. MT models with synchronizable strobes were released after that point.

In 1994, WH and RH models of the MT were released for outdoor applications. The WM model could also be used for outdoor applications.

In 1996, the strobe models of the MT4 were discontinued.[3]

In late 2001, the MT-121575W-FR, MT-241575W-FR, and MT-2475W-FR were released for ULC applications together with the MTWP-2475W-FR, and the MT-24-LS-VFR-ULC was discontinued.[5] The strobe was moved to slightly above the horn for optimal sound output while leaving space for the screw cover tabs, and the lettering was moved to the sides of the device, resembling the NS. At the beginning of 2002, these models were released for UL applications, and the LS/LSM/MS/IS models were discontinued.[6] The RSSP was recommended for applications requiring candela settings other than 15/75 and 75.

In March 2004, the MT-24MCW models were released with a similar strobe to the HS4-24MCW-FR, and the MT-2475W-FR was discontinued at the end of April 2004.[7][8]

At the end of 2015, the MT-241575W models were discontinued. Customers were instructed to switch to the corresponding MT-24MCW models.[9]

In 2019, the MT series was updated to make the Code 3 horn synchronizable.[10] The Code 3 tone remains unsynchronizable.

In 2023, the MT was mostly discontinued due to the release of the Eluxa ELMT and ELMTS.[11] The MT4-12/24 horns and MTWP horn strobes were discontinued in late 2024.[12]

Features

The MT can produce 8 tones: continuous horn, vibrating bell, march time horn, Code 3 horn, Code 3 tone, slow whoop, siren, and hi/lo. Tones are selected through DIP switches on the back of the device, making each horn only usable for a single tone at a time. The strobes were manufactured in 15, 15/75, 30, and 75 candela models, as well as multi-candela models.

Siemens

Siemens started rebranding the MT series around 2007 as a result of the Wheelock, Inc., v. Siemens Building Technologies, Inc. lawsuit that required the Siemens U series to be discontinued. The series was also sold under the Faraday brand using the same model names.[37]
