The Wheelock Exceder series is a series of notification appliances including horns, strobes, speakers, and low frequency sounders.

History

The Exceder series was first released in 2008 with horns, strobes, and horn strobes. These devices were successors to certain NACAlert and Z series devices, which were discontinued in March 2010. The initial wall-mount devices were designed similar to the Z series, but with a larger strobe lens and the horn grilles moved to the bottom.

The ceiling mount devices were also released around this time. The ceiling mount horn strobes have a similar layout as the SpectrAlert Advance series ceiling horn strobes, with a horn grille and 2 dummy grilles, while the remote horns and remote strobes maintained a consistent design with the horn strobes.

In March 2010, the AH, AS, NH, NS, ZNH, ZNS, and ZRS were discontinued, with the corresponding Exceder products recommended as replacements. The RSS was not discontinued at this time, but the ST strobes were still recommended as replacements.

In 2012, Wheelock released the Exceder LED series with wall-mounted devices equivalent to existing xenon-based devices. The series expanded over time to include speakers, low frequency sounders, and ceiling-mounted devices.

In 2017, Wheelock released the Exceder LED3 series, which uses newer LED bulbs with a shorter pulse duration to meet new NFPA requirements and allow LED and xenon strobes to be mixed in the same field of view. The Exceder LED series was discontinued in 2018 as a result.

In 2021, the Exceder LED3 series was discontinued due to the release of the Eluxa series. The xenon Exceder products remained in production until 2023.

Features

The xenon products are mounted on a universal mounting base (UMB), which features a similar prewiring and snap-on mechanism to the Z series. These products also support screws for additional security. The horns have 3 volume settings corresponding to anechoic sound outputs of 99 dBA, 95 dBA, or 90 dBA. The wall strobes can output 15, 15/75, 30, 75, 95, 110, 135, or 185 candela, and the ceiling strobes can output 15, 30, 60, 75, 95, 115, 150, or 177 candela.

The LED products also support snap mounting, but prewiring is not supported. The horns have 2 volume settings, while the strobes only support standard candela settings. The speakers in this series are high fidelity.
