Talk:Gentex Commander series

From The Fire Panel

Commander2, Commander3, and Commander4

Should the other 3 series have separate pages? Gentex doesn't seem to refer to these series as part of the Commander series. Mhgk (talk) 00:24, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

It’s kinda fuzzy because Gentex has the remote horns as part of the Commander 2 line of products, and the C2 and C3 are so similar that it feels like drawing an arbitrary line. And as it currently stands, the Simplex 4903 series article has all three versions of the 4903 strobes, the third of which is way more different from the previous two than the Commanders are from each other. Just my two cents. HenBasket (talk) 01:01, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
How about a page for Commander, a page for Commander 2/3/4 and Outdoor Commander, and a page for Commander 5? The distinction between Commander 1 and Commander 2/3/4 is similar to the distinction between SpectrAlert and SpectrAlert Advance, and Commander 5 looks like it will eventually replace the current generation of Commanders and speakers because it also includes remote speakers. Splitting Commander 5 would also be consistent with pages such as the Edwards Genesis LED series and Wheelock Exceder LED series. However, I am unsure what the page for Commander2/3/4 and Outdoor Commander should be titled if this is done. Mhgk (talk) 00:11, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
While I can see the argument for separating the Commander 1 from the others, I feel like the Commander 4 should be separated from the 2 and 3 given its lack of Whoop and Chime tones should we go down that route. However, unlike the your examples, the Commander series has fewer changes between its generations, with the possible exception of the Commander 1. The Commander 5, however, throws a wrench into this, because even if we had decided to keep the C1-4 in one article, the Commander 5 would be so different that it could be argued it needs a separate article. Another thing to consider is Gentex retroactively renaming the Commander 1 from just the Commander. Just my $0.02 HenBasket (talk) 00:35, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
Did Gentex ever refer to the original Commander series as the Commander 1, or was that name created by the community? This archived page warns that the original Commanders would be discontinued in the near future, but even this does not use the name "Commander 1." The pdf itself is named "C1_Discontinued.pdf" but it was never archived by the Wayback Machine. I think like what we did with the System Sensor SpectrAlert Classic Series, a redirect from "Commander 1" to "Commander" would be appropriate in this case. Mhgk (talk) 01:04, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
This time, it was actually a manufacturer retroactive rename as opposed to a community nickname. HenBasket (talk) 01:42, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
