The Wheelock N series is a series of horns and horn strobes that were produced alongside the AS. The NS is more compact than the AS with a smaller horn while still being universally mountable, at the cost of lower sound output.

History

The N series was released in 1997 together with the RSS and an updated AS as part of Wheelock's SquareONE brand.[1] The wall strobe options were the same as those on the AS and RSS, but ceiling models were not released at this time.

In 1998, the N series devices were updated to use a common beauty plate to simplify installation.[3] On the NS and NS4, the strobe was attached to the mounting plate, and it passed through an opening in the common beauty plate. The NH covered this opening with a block attached to the mounting plate.

In 1999, the NS-24MCW and NS4-24MCW were released as part of the SPEC1FIRE series of multi-candela devices.

In 2003, the NS4 was discontinued and replaced with the HS4.[4]

In 2006, the NH-12/24R, NS-24MCC, and NS-24MCCH were released to complement the RSS-MCCR and RSS-MCCHR.[5]

The N series was discontinued in March 2010 and replaced with the Exceder HS.[2]

Features

The NH Code 3 horn can be synchronized with the Wheelock sync protocol, and it can be coded when set to continuous operation. All models can run on either 12VDC or 24VDC.

The NS horn and strobe can be synchronized when connected to an SM or DSM, and the horn can be silenced by the sync module while keeping the strobe active. The NS is also capable of outputting either a continuous or Code 3 horn at 2 different volume levels regardless of synchronization. Depending on the model, the strobe candela may be 15, 15/75, 30, 75, 95, 110, 115, 135, 177, or 185.

The NS4 has separate strobe terminals for the horn and strobe. The synchronization protocol is entirely handled through the strobe terminal, allowing the horn to be freely coded when it is set to continuous, but this means the horn cannot operate when the strobe is not powered. Besides the capability of 4-wire operation, the NS4 has very similar sound and candela output as the NS.

Siemens

Siemens rebranded the ceiling-mount N series starting around 2007 as a result of the Wheelock, Inc., v. Siemens Building Technologies, Inc. lawsuit that required the Siemens U series to be discontinued. The series was also sold under the Faraday brand using the same model names.[9]
