Software let's you interface with a Fire or Security panel with a PC/Laptop, whether thats to perform diagnostics, or to make changes to panel programing. PC programming is more popular then LCD programming because it's a lot easier then going through a lot of menus and doing lots of functions on a tiny LCD with a few buttons, and for some panels, LCD programming is not available. If you're a technician, PC programming is probably the way to go, if you're just an enthusiast, it might be a bit hard to figure out PC programmers, so LCD programming should be fine for you. Many company's software (such as Simplex ES Programmer) is completely proprietary and is only distributed to employees with authority, need special licenses, and are for panels without LCD programming. This is why enthusiasts should avoid high-end panels unless they really know what they are doing. Many PC programming software has the ability to store multiple jobs, store customer contact information, have multiple methods (local and remote) of connecting to the panel, and a lot of times have features that can't be normally accessed through LCD programming.
